Hive Tracks

In class we talked about several concepts that dealt with intellectual property, security, and privacy. Some of these were related to things like GPS location tracking, sharing your own bee data, and holding the company liable if you use the service incorrectly leading to a loss of your own bees. I think that all of these were interesting and that Hive Tracks took a good stance on all of them. Dr. Wilkes told us that GPS is used to keep track of where hives are located and that data is visible to the user, but you can also opt in to having your hive locations shared with other users of Hive Tracks. I really like the concept of instead of by default everyone being able to see other hive locations that people have opted to share, you must make your hive locations public if you want to see the other public hive locations. This way people are encouraged to be more open with their data so that everyone benefits instead of being able to benefit without contributing yourself. Bee data was under a similar default to private but you can choose to share it with other people if you want.
